What the official sources say
The FCA announced that NatWest was fined £264,772,619.95 following convictions for three offences of failing to comply with money laundering regulations. NatWest had pleaded guilty in October 2021. [1]
The case concerned monitoring of Fowler Oldfield during 2012–2016. The FCA described approximately £365 million in deposits, including around £264 million cash, unaddressed staff concerns and monitoring that incorrectly classified some cash deposits as cheques. [1]
NatWest’s offences concerned monitoring failures. Do not describe the bank as convicted of laundering the full deposit amount. The source quotes the judge distinguishing its failures from complicity in laundering. Current controls are not assessed here.

Trace the data meaning
A correct amount with the wrong transaction type can change monitoring outcomes. Test whether data fields retain their business meaning across systems.
Connect human and automated signals
Staff observations can expose a blind spot in automated monitoring. Ensure repeated concerns are linked and reach an investigator who can act.
Avoid a single-rule response
Changing a cash threshold does not repair misclassification. Correct the source mapping and assess the population affected before drawing conclusions about detection.
What would you do next?
Fictional exercise: Branch staff repeatedly describe large cash deposits into a jewellery business account. Central monitoring labels the deposits as cheques, so the cash rules do not run. The customer profile says little cash is expected.
