About LearnAML, credibility and eligibility
What is LearnAML.org and who are the courses designed for?
LearnAML.org is an independent education platform offering practical, self-paced training in AML/CFT, sanctions and financial crime compliance. Every course is prepared and reviewed by field leaders: AML, CFT, sanctions and cryptoasset compliance specialists who have helped countries align their national frameworks with the FATF standards. Courses suit newcomers and career changers, students, frontline staff, KYC and CDD analysts, sanctions and screening staff, investigators, compliance officers, MLROs and their deputies. For organisations, we also design tailored training for teams.
Who prepares and reviews the courses?
Every course is prepared and reviewed by field leaders: AML, CFT, sanctions and cryptoasset compliance specialists. They have worked with countries and institutions, helping countries align their national AML/CFT frameworks with the FATF standards, including the standards for virtual assets (crypto), countering the financing of terrorism and sanctions, and supporting FATF action-plan work.
The lead author is Dr Imran Rasool Khan, CAMS (Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist), CGSS (Certified Global Sanctions Specialist) and Fulbright scholar, with experience in FATF action-plan work, AML/CFT governance and professional training. Read the author profile.
How do you keep the content accurate and up to date?
Every course and guide is built on primary sources and reviewed by the same field leaders who prepare it.
- Courses follow the FATF Recommendations, the global AML/CFT standard.
- Each country guide links the official source for every section and shows its review date and an update note. The current guides were last reviewed on 7 October 2026.
- Professional programme modules are released only once they are complete and reviewed.
If you notice something that has changed, email support@learnaml.org.
Are the courses recognised globally?
Our courses are built on the FATF Recommendations, the global AML/CFT standard that more than 200 jurisdictions have committed to through the FATF and its regional bodies. The risk-based approach, due diligence, sanctions and reporting practices you learn are the ones these standards set wherever you work. Every course is prepared and reviewed by field leaders who have helped countries align their national frameworks with these standards.
How does LearnAML relate to the FATF and other standard-setters?
LearnAML is an independent education platform that teaches the international standards set by the FATF and applied by countries and regulators worldwide. Our specialists have worked with countries on national framework reforms and FATF action plans. Every course and guide links to official sources from bodies such as the FATF, the UN, OFAC, MENAFATF, APG and the Egmont Group, so you can see exactly what each lesson is based on. Browse the official sources.
Do I need prior banking or compliance experience?
No, not for the beginner courses. AML Foundations & Core Concepts assumes no prior AML knowledge, and Cryptoassets & Financial Crime needs no programming knowledge. The two intermediate courses, CDD & EDD in Practice and Sanctions Compliance in Practice, are easier if you already know the basics, so many learners take Foundations first.
Which course should I start with?
If you are new to AML, start with AML Foundations & Core Concepts. Otherwise, choose by the work you do:
- New to AML: AML Foundations & Core Concepts
- Reviewing customer files: CDD & EDD in Practice
- Working with cryptoassets: Cryptoassets & Financial Crime
- Handling sanctions alerts: Sanctions Compliance in Practice
Courses and the learning experience
Are the training programmes self-paced or live?
All four courses are self-paced and online, so you can start, pause and return whenever suits you. Lessons are short, each followed by a knowledge check, and your progress is saved in My learning. Live sessions, online or in person, are offered only as part of tailored training for organisations.
How long does each course take?
AML Foundations & Core Concepts takes about 3 to 4 hours across 7 lessons and 42 topics. The other courses are self-paced, so your time depends on how fully you work through the practice materials:
- CDD & EDD in Practice: 6 lessons and 26 pages of practice PDFs
- Cryptoassets & Financial Crime: 8 lessons, 48 topics and 32 pages of PDFs
- Sanctions Compliance in Practice: 8 lessons, 34 pages of PDFs and a 24-question final assessment
How long do I have access to the course materials after enrolling?
Access to the four current courses does not expire. Once you enrol, you can return to the lessons, your progress and the materials you have unlocked at any time through My learning. If paid courses are offered in future, their access period will be shown before purchase.
Can I access the learning platform on mobile devices?
Yes. Courses run in your web browser, so you can learn on a phone, tablet or computer without installing an app. Your progress is saved to your account, so you can start a lesson on one device and continue on another. For the fillable workbooks, a computer or tablet is more comfortable.
How practical are the courses?
Every topic connects theory to real work, such as a customer risk assessment, a due diligence decision or an internal escalation. Courses draw on our specialists’ work with countries and institutions and aim for understanding, not memorisation. You practise on fictional cases with fillable workbooks, then compare your work with worked answers, so you build judgement you can use on the job.
What materials and downloads are included?
Each course includes downloadable practice materials, free with your learner account:
- Foundations: lesson references that unlock as you go, and the Essential Resource Bank after all seven lessons
- CDD & EDD: three practice PDFs (26 pages) built around a case study
- Cryptoassets: three PDFs (32 pages)
- Sanctions: a field guide, a fillable decision workbook and worked answers (34 pages), unlocked after all eight lessons and a final assessment score of 75% or higher
Free quick references, such as the Red Flags Frontline Checklist, are on the Resources page.
Do I need an account to use LearnAML?
You need a free learner account to take courses and download materials, but not to browse. Country guides, Insights articles, the Resources directory and course descriptions are open to everyone.
Do you cover the AML/CFT rules in my country?
Courses teach the FATF standards that apply in every jurisdiction, and our country guides cover national rules. Guides for Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia explain the legal framework, supervisors and FIU, who must comply, key obligations, FATF status, risks and official sources, and end with a short quiz. Each was last reviewed on 7 October 2026. If your country is not covered, tell us at support@learnaml.org.
What is the professional programme and when will it be available?
The professional programme is an intermediate-to-advanced curriculum in development, released module by module. Twelve planned module themes run from risk assessment and CDD/EDD through monitoring, investigations, STR/SAR reporting, sanctions, DNFBPs, enforcement and international cooperation. Each lesson ends with what good looks like to a supervisor. Modules are released only once complete and reviewed, and nothing is for sale yet. Follow the professional programme.
How can I find a specific topic, lesson or guide on the site?
Use the search box at the top of this page. It searches these answers and the whole site: courses, lessons, country guide sections, Insights articles and pages. Lessons that need a free account are labelled. To find official documents such as FATF reports or sanctions lists, use the search on the Resources page.
Certificates, exams, credits and career value
Do I receive a certificate of completion?
Yes, for three courses: AML Foundations & Core Concepts, CDD & EDD in Practice and Cryptoassets & Financial Crime. You receive a LearnAML certificate of completion once you finish the course and pass its assessments. It shows the first and last name in your account profile, so check these before you finish, along with the completion date and a reference number.
Sanctions Compliance in Practice records your completion but does not currently issue a certificate.
How do the assessments work?
Courses include knowledge checks as you go and end with a final assessment.
- Pass mark: 70% for Foundations, CDD & EDD and Cryptoassets; 75% for Sanctions
- Retakes: no limit, so you can review the lessons and try again
- Integrity: you must complete the assessments yourself
How can I show what I have learned?
Your certificate of completion records the course, your name and the completion date, with a reference number. Add it to your CV or LinkedIn profile, for example “Certificate of completion, AML Foundations & Core Concepts, LearnAML.org”. The worked practice cases also give you concrete examples of your reasoning, such as a risk rating or an escalation decision, to discuss with an employer or in an interview.
Do your courses prepare me for industry exams like CAMS or ICA?
LearnAML courses build a working understanding of many topics covered by professional qualifications such as CAMS and the ICA certificates: the risk-based approach, CDD and EDD, sanctions, suspicious activity reporting and governance. The lead author holds the CAMS and CGSS qualifications. Our courses make strong groundwork alongside the official syllabus and study materials from ACAMS or ICA, which you can find on our Resources page.
Do the courses count towards CPE or CE credits?
You can record LearnAML courses as self-directed continuing professional development. Your certificate shows the course and completion date, and each course states its study time, such as about 3 to 4 hours for Foundations. How many hours count towards a specific CPE, CPD or CE requirement is set by your professional body or employer, so check their rules.
Will these courses help my career?
The courses give you practical skills you can use at work and discuss with confidence. They are prepared by specialists who have done this work with countries and institutions. After the courses, you should be able to:
- assess customer risk and document a due diligence decision
- recognise red flags and escalate a concern correctly
- triage a sanctions alert and record your reasoning
- explain cryptoasset risks and the controls that address them
The worked practice cases give you examples of your reasoning to talk through in interviews.
Fees, teams and institutions, privacy and support
Are the courses really free?
Yes. All four current courses are free with a learner account, and no payment details are needed. Free does not mean lighter: each course is prepared and reviewed by the same field leaders and includes practice materials and assessments. Tailored training for organisations is a separate service. If a course is ever offered for a fee, the price and terms will be shown before you buy.
What is your refund policy if I am not satisfied with a course?
The current courses are free, so there is nothing to refund. If paid courses are offered in future, the price, access period and any cancellation or refund terms will be shown before purchase, as set out in our Terms of Use. If a course is not meeting your needs, tell us at support@learnaml.org.
Do you offer training or discounts for compliance teams?
Yes. We design tailored AML/CFT and sanctions training for teams in regulated organisations. Your staff can also take the four free courses at no cost, each with their own learner account. Tailored programmes are scoped after a discovery call, so there is no standard price list. Discuss your training needs.
How does institutional training work?
Every engagement starts with a discovery call about your risks, procedures and systems. We then tailor one of four formats:
- Executive briefing: 60 to 90 minutes
- Capability workshop: 1 to 2 days
- Blended programme: 4 to 8 weeks
- Annual refresh
Delivery is online, in person or blended, tailored to your jurisdiction and sector. Your teams keep the templates, checklists and playbooks, and progress is measured with before-and-after diagnostics. See sample programmes.
Can I use LearnAML materials in my organisation’s internal training?
Not without our written permission. LearnAML materials are for your own learning, and copying, reselling, republishing or distributing them needs our written agreement. Colleagues can take the free courses with their own accounts, or ask us about tailored training, where your teams keep the tools we build together. Never upload confidential case files, STRs or real customer information to the site.
How should I apply what I learn at work?
Use the courses to build your judgement, then apply it through your organisation’s policies and procedures. Obligations vary by jurisdiction and sector, so our country guides link each point to the official law or regulator guidance, and the courses show how to document and escalate decisions clearly. For a specific case, follow your internal procedures and involve your compliance function.
How is my personal data used, and can I delete my account?
Your learning records are not published, and you can ask us to delete your account. Your account is used to save your progress and issue your certificates. Send any data request, including deletion, to support@learnaml.org. Full details are in our Privacy Policy. The site is intended for adults.
How do I get help with my account or a course?
Email support@learnaml.org. Include the email address on your account and the course or page you need help with, so we can find the right answer quickly. Organisations can also use the training enquiry form.
